A brief History of Ottakring
The 16th District of Vienna
It is said that Ottakring is on the site of one of Vienna's oldest settlements.
It is first mentioned in 1150 in a document in which a vineyard in "Otachringen" is presented to the Convent of St. Peter in Salzburg under the reign of Archbishop Eberhard.
Three quarters of a millennium later, the federal government of Lower Austria unifies the two villages Neulerchenfeld and Ottakring - against the will of its inhabitants - with the City of Vienna. Since then, Ottakring is Vienna´s 16th district.
(Around the year 1800, Neulerchenfeld is called "the Biggest Inn of the Roman Empire" because 103 of 150 houses have the authorization selling drinks.)
