Beer Cerveza Bier Öl THE ZIPF BREWERY - HISTORY

1858 - 1914

In 1858, the Viennese banker Franz Schaup purchased the Hoffmann property with a peat bath licence, mill and a small brewery, which at the time produced 1,452 hl of beer annually. Expansion then followed at the breakneck speed of this period of rapid industrial expansion. Beer output increased ten-fold in five years and despite being a country brewery, Zipf stayed on the pace with technical innovations (such as artificial cooling and the introduction of Austria’s first industrial, electrical railway in 1894). The brewery also built up a reputation for its social activities (creation of a support fund). Between 1892 and 1914, beer production rose from 97,450 hl to 142,335 hl.

1914 - 1958

In 1923, Zipf obtained the Wörgl Brewery. Further successful development was then badly affected by the depression of the 1930s and World War II. The use of the site for the “Schlier” armaments company, the gradual requisition of the natural cellars and the technical equipment, slowly brought brewing activities to a halt. Following the repair of the serious war damage under the management of Dr. Fritz Kretz (the great-grandson of the founder) and systematic modernisation, the centenary of the brewery in 1958 was celebrated with the renewed passing of the 200,000 hl output mark. The continual updating of the brewery systems and targeted marketing activities (Zipfer Beer _ “Ein Glas heller Freude”) then created a rapid upswing.

1958 - 2002

At the beginning of the 1960s, Zipfer began to alter its product range. Initially, a new lighter type of beer was developed, which with its unmistakeable, dry hopped flavour started to make “beer history” in 1967 under the name Zipfer Urtyp. Indeed, Urtyp pre-empted the subsequent consumer flavour preference for pilsner style beers.

Particularly in recent years, the Zipf Brewery has proved to be continually one step ahead and has shaped the Austrian beer market. At the end of the 1960s, lightweight plastic crates superseded their wooden predecessors, while the venerable oak kegs were replaced by aluminium.

After the merger with Österreichische Brau AG in 1970, an annual production level of over 500,000 hl was achieved in 1971.

1958-2002 (cont.)

At the end of the 70s, a new market was opened up with the first 6-bottle pack (launched in autumn 1978 with the Zipfer “Stefanibock”, which was quickly followed by the Zipfer Urtyp 6-pack). The convenience, low weight and handy quantity for small households has continued to prove effective right up to the present day, although since the mid-90s, multiple use crates developed by the Zipf Brewery have been employed to supply the trade. With its much-loved 5l party keg, Zipf has been a synonym for this product category since the 80s and in the meantime an integrated tap has been added. In 1991, a new bottling plant with a capacity of 72,000 bottles per hour went into operation. In 1993, Österreichische Brau AG became a subsidiary of Brau Union and with effect from January 1, 1998, the Brau AG became the Brau Union Österreich. Further innovations in the 90s demonstrated that many new ideas for the beer market originate from Zipf. In 1997, Zipfer Urtyp Medium was introduced and in August 2000 a new beer era commenced with the product Zipfer Sparkling. In June 2001, a new mash house went into operation in Zipf.
